I am a lender and, I have to admit, sometimes we have some pretty silly requests! The silliness has increased in recent years because of the increased documentation demands. I hear the wisecrack all of the time "What's next, are they going to want a blood sample?" Well, maybe not a blood sample, but we often ask for some pretty silly things!
Here are some of the things I have had to ask my clients for during my twenty five years of mortgage origination:
- A death certificate of my client's employee - had to verify he was not an expense of my client's business any more.
- A picture of the roof of a client's roof to verify the camper shell had been removed. It was placed there during a rainstorm and the appraiser took a picture of it!
- Explanation for the inquiry into my client’s credit for a Victoria's Secret account - my client was a man! Kind of awkward to ask for this!
- A copy of my client's son's driver license - he was paying child support until he turned 18
I advise my clients that they should be prepared to be asked for a lot of documentation that doesn’t seem to make sense or necessary – as long as they are prepared and have the right attitude, it becomes something to laugh about!
